I spent Autumn working on the piece "Knotted Bond" to enter into the Stuff Art Aotearoa Gold Award for the Auckland Regional leg. "Knotted Bond" depicts a characterful tree from the Waitangi - Haruru Falls walk with harakeke weaving blending into the ground. The harakeke forms a knot at the base. The tree symbolises the significance of the land (whenua) in the Waitangi area and the weaving is our connection to the land. The knot represents unity and an unbreakable bond. A couple of weeks before heading up to the show I was thrilled to receive the call that "Knotted Bond" was judged to be highly commended and I became one of four finalists for the Auckland region.
At the end of summer I sourced some more timber and delivered it to be planed and sanded. I love picking my slabs up after they have been processed - they exude beauty which influences the compositions that will be burnt in to them.
From February to April I went in search of more inspiration for my wood burning, into New Zealand forest areas I'd never been before. Starting with a trip to the Bay of Islands - Paihia and Waitangi then onwards to Martinborough. I also spent some time in Otago and Southland.
